Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treatment

B 300x250

Most of us have our own idiosyncratic behaviors and while some might want to check twice whether the main door of the house is locked before leaving, others may just have a strong desire to see things kept in their right place. These specific quirky behaviors are rather normal since each one of us is allowed a certain level of insanity. Obsessive compulsive disorder treatment is necessary to enable the person to lead a normal life.

The obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition in which there is an uncontrollable desire to perform actions in a specific routine manner. Sometimes the disorder pertains to specific kinds of ‘must do’ or ‘must have’ options. For example, some people may be extremely finicky about cleanliness and may keep wiping all objects in their house or washing their hands every few minutes. Others might have a penchant for holding onto specific objects, no matter what they need to do or where they need to go. The irony is that while those suffering from OCD understand that their desire to do certain things may be irrational and out of place, they are unable to hold themselves back despite the knowledge.

Some of the common types of obsessive compulsive disorders are listed below:

-        Those who are afraid of getting tainted and therefore have a need to wash hands and face every now and then

-        Those who continuously check whether they have got it right, even if it is something as simple as shutting the door

-        Those who must always have some kind of a symmetry in whatever they see

-        Those who horde all objects that they can see cannot even dream of throwing anything away

-        Those who view everyone and every action that they is performed with suspicion

While obsessive compulsive disorder treatment is possible, there is no available cure. This basically means that the condition is managed and controlled but cannot be removed completely. Some obsessive compulsive disorder treatment options are listed below.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treatment

Medication – Medicines, when used for obsessive compulsive disorder treatment, relieve the symptoms of OCD. The SSRI’s or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors that is prescribed increases the level of serotonin in the brain. Since this group of medicine has lesser side effects than some of the older medicines that were prescribed, SSRI’s are the first line of treatment for OCD. The side effects like headaches, insomnia and diarrhea that do occur are mild and manageable.

Tranquilizers – These are used at times when the symptoms of OCD become difficult to handle. Since tranquilizers are habit forming they should used only when extremely necessary.

Psychosurgery – This obsessive compulsive disorder treatment has replaced the earlier procedure of lobotomy since changes on the nerve structures resulted in sever memory loss and brain damage. Psychosurgery uses electrodes to severe certain parts of the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI is used to select the specific area where the electrodes need to be applied.

It is important to note that though medication can relieve symptoms of OCD temporarily, psychosurgery may actually result in long term changes that may occur. However, the risk of psychosurgery is high.

Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy – CBT is an obsessive compulsive disorder treatment that is considered extremely effective. The basic fundamental belief behind CBT is that we can change thought by changing behavior. The patient is exposed to situations where he may want to carry out an obsessive behavior but is not allowed to. Over repeated such exposure and stimuli a large number of patients actually change compulsive behavior patterns.

Inositol

One of the recent obsessive compulsive disorder treatment options that have been found is inositol. This is an isomer of glucose and is known to work in a manner similar to SSRI’s. However being a natural substance it does not have any side effects. This is an emerging new obsessive compulsive disorder treatment that can replace convention psychiatric medication.

There are also other remedies that have been known to help in managing OCD. Self suggestion, group therapy and herbal remedies can ease off symptoms and help control the condition over time.
