Panic Attacks During Pregnancy

What are panic attacks?  Simply defined, panic attacks are sudden surges of fear without any apparent cause.  If you are in the throes of a panic attack, you may display the following symptoms:

  • Your heart pounding rapidly inside your ribcage
  • Acute chest pain
  • Feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous
  • Excessive sweating, sometimes accompanied by chills or hot flashes
  • Shaking and trembling
  • Numbness in the fingers and limbs
  • Choking, shortness of breath or the feeling of being smothered
  • A sense of detachment or unreality
  • Feeling like you are going to die
  • An irrational fear of impending doom

Causes of Panic Attacks During Pregnancy

Amongst women, it is often theorised that the hormonal imbalance they experience whilst pregnant is a major cause of panic attacks during pregnancy.  This hormonal imbalance can lead to mood swings, and mood swings can include feelings of stress and anxiety.

On the other hand, it may be a different case amongst women who are already suffering from some form of panic disorder before they got pregnant.  Pregnancy is a turning point in a woman’s life, and this naturally raises questions like “Will I be a good mum?” or “Am I keeping my baby healthy?”  These questions can lead to feelings of fear, and the fear itself can trigger the panic attack.

Effects of Panic Attacks on Unborn Infants

Unfortunately, panic attacks can harm the baby the pregnant woman is carrying.  Mum’s panic attacks can cause a great deal of stress on the baby.  Stress is not a good thing for unborn infants because it slows down their development, weakens their immune system and makes them prone to illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

Medical researchers have also noted that frequent panic attacks during pregnancy can also lead to the development of post-partum depression.  A woman who experiences post-partum depression will find it hard to bond with her baby and will find herself incapable of feeding and caring for her child.

Treatment for Panic Attacks During Pregnancy

Panic Attacks During Pregnancy – Here Is The Guide

What can you do if you are a pregnant woman and you have found yourself prone to having panic attacks?  The answer here is to seek medical help immediately.  Your doctor will prescribe to you a form of treatment that is appropriate to your condition.

The most common forms of treatment for panic disorder are medication and therapy.  It is possible for your doctor to forego prescribing medication for you because whatever drugs you take will affect your baby.  However, your doctor may recommend for you to undergo cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which deals with your fear by changing your thought patterns in relation to that fear.

If you cannot afford to go through therapy, you can learn some self-help techniques that will make you relax and clear your mind of the fear.  When you have calmed your mind down and realised that your fears are baseless, you will no longer experience panic attacks during pregnancy.
