Treatment for Anxiety – Signs, Symptoms and Treatment for Anxiety

B 300x250

It is very important for you to seek treatment for anxiety once you realise that your fears and worries have become overwhelming enough to prevent you from functioning normally in your daily life.  Anxiety disorders are curable conditions and the chances of successful treatment are high if they are caught at their onset.  However, they can get worse if they are ignored.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to any distressful situation.  It is an emotion that all people feel.  But if it persists for more than six months and is hindering you from doing your work, from seeing other people or from enjoying things that you used to love, then it is a disorder and it must be treated.

There are many forms of anxiety disorders; they are listed below, with their characteristics and symptoms.

  1. Panic disorder.  Panic disorder is characterised by sudden attacks that leave you terrified and disoriented. Symptoms include pounding heartbeat, numbness in the hands, profuse sweating, chills, nausea, and chest pain.  In the course of a panic attack, you may feel that you are losing control and you get a sense of impending doom.
  1. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  People who suffer from OCD are consumed by rituals and the need for symmetry and order.  They cannot function without their rituals; ironically, their rituals prevent them from functioning as well.  They also often have obsessive thoughts about doing harm upon other people or doing something that they do not really like.
  1. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  People usually develop PTSD after experiencing or witnessing a horrifying ordeal.  People with PTSD become emotionally detached after their ordeal, lose the capacity to show affection, lose interest in the things they used to love doing, and are often irritable or even violent.  They also have nightmares and flashbacks where they relive the trauma they have endured.
  1. Social phobias.  Some people misinterpret social phobia for extreme shyness.  People who have this disorder have a great fear of embarrassment.  When forced into a social situation, a person with social phobia will tremble, sweat excessively, feel nauseous, and have difficulty talking.
  1. Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).  People who are afflicted with GAD experience exaggerated worries or tension without any seeming causes.  They cannot relax nor concentrate on a given task when in the midst of an anxiety attack, and they exhibit headaches, fatigue, muscle pains, trembling, twitching, nausea and irritability.

Medication is one common form of treatment for anxiety.  However, medication is only meant to control the symptoms of the disorder but not to cure it.  Examples of medication given to people with anxiety disorders are anti-depressants and beta-blockers.

Another form of treatment for anxiety is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).  CBT aims to cure the disorder by changing the thought patterns that feed your fears.  One example of CBT is exposure therapy for OCD, where the patient would be encouraged to get his hands dirty and not wash them for a given period.

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford medication and CBT sessions with a therapist.  If that is your case, you have the option to seek treatment for anxiety by going through a self-help programme.

There are also inexpensive herbal supplements that you can use as a substitute for treatment for anxiety medications.  These herbal supplements are typically made from extracts of borage, chamomile, ginseng, gingko, lemon balm, peppermint, verbena or Houpu magnolia.

It does not really matter what form of treatment for anxiety that you take.  What matters is that you seek a treatment for your condition as soon as possible before your condition becomes worse.
