What Causes Panic Attacks

What causes panic attacks? For people who experience them and for people who have loved ones regularly afflicted by them, this question is a worthy one to ask. After all, the question of what causes panic attacks unlocks the answers that can help people cope with anxiety and look for forms of treatment that will free them from panic attacks permanently.

At the moment, medical researchers are not entirely sure of what causes panic attacks. However, they do hold many theories about it. One such theory revolves around the amygdala in the brain and the “fight or flight” response.

The Amygdala and Our Perception of Danger

Evolutionary scientists believe that our ability to feel panic and anxiety are considerable factors in the survival of the human species in the last thousands of years. Panic and anxiety are proofs that we are indeed a self-preserving species.

However, there are instances where we perceive danger when none exist. When an overload of danger signals passes through the nervous system to the brain, a part of the brain called the amygdala gets to work. The amygdala is a group of cells in the temporal lobe of the brain, and it is responsible for processing how we react emotionally to certain stimuli.

In the case of danger stimuli, the amygdala reacts by making us feel anxious or panicky. The amygdala then sets into motion what we call the “fight or flight” response.

What Causes Panic Attacks

As its name suggests, the “fight or flight” response is a condition where our bodies physically prepare to fight the imminent danger we are facing or to flee from the scene as fast as we could. It all depends on the level of danger ahead of us.

A number of things happen during the “fight or flight” response. For one, high levels of adrenalin and cortisol are produced in the blood stream to give our body temporary strength, speed and alertness. The body begins to shut down the digestive system so that it can focus its energies more on fighting or fleeing.

In addition, the heart begins to pump faster to increase the circulation of blood throughout the body. Our lungs force us to breathe faster so that more oxygen can be delivered to the cells of our muscles. Our vision also becomes narrowed so we can see more clearly what is ahead of us

As an old adage goes, too much of a good thing can become bad. Thus, no matter how much it has helped us survive and evolve as a species in the past thousands of years, the “fight or flight” response is not always good, especially when there is no real danger imminent.

First time panic attacks can be triggered by anything, and they can also be extremely terrifying. Studies have shown that recurring panic attacks are triggered more by the memory of the terror experienced during the first panic attack rather than the current situation itself. This is why it is important for people with anxiety disorders to face this fear in order to be rid of their panic attacks.

Knowing what causes panic attacks is essential information for anyone who experiences it or has to live with it. It can also help in finding the right form of treatment for panic attacks.
